Lucy was an only child living in a small town. But she was never lonely because she had her best friend, Max, the golden retriever.

Every day, after school, Lucy and Max would play catch in their backyard. They would run around until they were both tired and panting.

One day at school, Lucy's classmates started to make fun of her for not having any human friends. This made Lucy feel sad and alone.

Returning home, Lucy hugged Max tightly, crying. Max, sensing her sadness, licked her face, trying to cheer her up.

That night, Lucy talked to Max about her day. She felt better as Max seemed to understand and comfort her.

Lucy decided that she didn't need to be friends with those who didn't understand her bond with Max. She fell asleep with a determined look on her face.

The next day, Lucy brought Max to school for show-and-tell. The children were amazed by Max's tricks and his gentle nature.

Lucy shared stories of her adventures with Max. The children listened in awe, and some even wished they had a friend like Max.

From that day onwards, Lucy and Max became the center of attention. Everyone wanted to play with them, and Lucy was no longer alone.

Lucy realized that she didn't need to change herself to make friends. She just needed to be herself and the right people would appreciate her.

At the end of the day, Lucy and Max returned to their favorite place, their backyard. They played until the sun set, and then they lay down, looking at the stars.

Lucy whispered to Max, 'You're my best friend, Max.' Max, hearing his name, wagged his tail, snuggling closer to Lucy. They fell asleep under the starlit sky, the best of friends.
