Every day, the peddler would load his donkey with goods, selling them from farmhouse to farmhouse, village to village.

The poor donkey was burdened with the heavy load. Every evening, it would moan in pain, foot sore and weary.

The old grey cat would listen to the donkey's moans every night. 'Poor old donkey,' she would sigh, sympathizing with its plight.

One morning, the peddler loaded the donkey with a dozen sacks full of salt. The load was heavier than usual, making the donkey groan in discomfort.

They set out as usual, the peddler walking ahead, whistling merrily, while the donkey followed, struggling under the weight of the salt.

The path was tough, and the donkey felt the strain. Suddenly, it stumbled, spilling the load of salt into the stream.

As the salt dissolved in the stream, the weight of the load lightened. The donkey felt relieved and continued its journey with a lighter heart.

The peddler was surprised to see the lightened load and realized what had happened. He sighed, knowing he had lost a day's earnings but glad that the donkey seemed relieved.

That night, the donkey rested in the stable with the cat, not moaning as before. 'You seem happier today,' the cat purred, noticing the change.

The donkey nodded, remembering the lightened load and the relief it brought. An idea started to form in its mind.

As they reached the stream again, the donkey intentionally stumbled, dropping the sacks into the water. The salt dissolved, and the load was lightened again.

The peddler realized the donkey's trick and frowned. 'So, you've learned to be cunning,' he said, looking at the donkey sternly.

The peddler decided to teach the donkey a lesson. Instead of salt, he filled the sacks with cotton and loaded them onto the donkey.

As they reached the stream, the donkey, expecting the load to lighten, purposefully fell into the water. But this time, the cotton absorbed the water, making the load even heavier.

The donkey groaned under the unexpected weight. It realized the peddler's trick and hung its head in shame.

The peddler looked at the donkey. 'You see, cunning can't always help. Sometimes, honesty is the best policy,' he said, patting the donkey.

The donkey told the cat about its day. 'I learned a valuable lesson today,' it said, 'Honesty really is the best policy.'

The cat nodded, purring in agreement. 'It's a lesson well learned,' she said, closing her eyes.

The donkey never tried to lighten its load again. It worked hard and honestly, bearing its load with patience and dignity.

The peddler, noticing the change in the donkey's behavior, felt proud. 'You have indeed learned your lesson,' he said, smiling.

The peddler and the donkey continued to work together. They became a symbol of hard work and honesty in their town.

And so, they lived, the peddler and his donkey, spreading the simple yet powerful lesson of honesty and hard work, earning respect and love from all.
