Pearl, the little white kitten, lived in a peaceful farmhouse a few miles from the city. One evening she chased a mouse through a small tear in the screen door and found herself outside. She caught sight of a monarch butterfly that flitted overhead, seemingly teasing Pearl with its darting movements as if to say "Come play with me". Pearl chased the butterfly through fields, and over dirt roads, until at last she found herself lost.

As the sun set, Pearl found herself drawn to the soft glow of the bustling city lights on the horizon. Soon she found herself stalking the busy streets of this strange concrete jungle. The smells and sounds both excited and frightened her. She wandered aimlessly amongst the dwindling humans who paid her no mind. A familiar scent of food drew her to a dark alley.

Pearl entered cautiously searching for the source of the scent. She froze suddenly when she heard a deep growl. Fear gripped her as she realized the danger she was in as a large, dirty junkyard dog stalked closer. The dog named Rex barked twice and the startled kitten darted wildly out into the street.

The honk of horns and bright glare of headlights from a fast approaching taxicab held her frozen in her tracks. Moments before it was to hit Pearl, Rex ran out, grabbed her by the scruff in his powerful jaws, pulling her back to the safety of the alley. Pearl was saved, but terrified of the dog

Rex led Pearl to his home - a junkyard on the outskirts of the city. The yard was a labrynth of crushed cars stacked like pancakes, and mountains of junk reaching for the stars above. He nudged an old hubcap that held rainwater towards her, and they drank together. Then Rex brought some scraps of fish from a restaurant's garbage bag. Despite her fear, Pearl felt safer with Rex, who seemed to understand her predicament.

Underneath Rex's tough exterior lay a heart of gold, a loyal dog who had been abandoned by his humans in the city. He decided to help Pearl find her way back home in the morning. As Rex settled in for the night he snuffed at Pearl indicating she was safe. Pearl sniffed around and eventually curled up between his front paws. She drifted off to sleep, purring softly as Rex kept watch in the night.

The duo set out at dawn. Rex navigating through the city maze of streets and alleys, while Pearl clung onto him. Their travels led them past many humans who were to preoccupied with their own business to notice or care about two mangy strays.

They encountered many challenges - busy streets, hostile strays, and a short escape from the local animal control officers. Yet, Rex continued to push on determined to deliver Pearl safely home.

As the cityscape gave way to the countryside, Pearl's excitement grew. She recognized the familiar fields and the scent of her home. There was the dirt road. And, oh look! There is the field with the wild flowers! Pearl's heart leapt with joy at the sight of the big red barn in the distance.

Clawing and kneading frantically with excitement on his back caused Rex to increase his pace. Finally, they reached the farmhouse. Pearl purred in joy, while Rex wagged his tail, and they both fell to roll in the grass pleased with their success.

Farmer Ted, surprised to see Rex, was overjoyed to have Pearl back home. "I was out looking for you all night little lady. Now, don't you go runnin' off like that agin." Ted softly scolded as he scratched her belly. "And who might you be?" The farmer said looking Rex over. He saw a ratty collar with a bronze tag that said only "REX".

Farmer Ted told Rex he was welcome to stay at home in the farmhouse. Rex wagged his tail frantically at the thought of once again having a home. Pearl and Rex went on to have many grand adventures full of mystery and wonder, but those are stories for another time.
