Once upon a time, in a small village nestled between the hills, lived a young boy named Peter. He was tasked with watching over the village's sheep as they grazed on a hillside.

Peter found this job incredibly boring. He would sit on the hill, his gaze lost in the distance, while the sheep grazed peacefully around him.

One day, to amuse himself, Peter came up with a plan. He decided to play a prank on the villagers. He took a deep breath and shouted, "Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!"

The villagers, hearing his cries, dropped everything they were doing and ran up the hill to drive the wolf away. But when they arrived, they found no wolf, just Peter laughing at their worried faces.

"Don't scream wolf when there is no wolf, boy!" one of the villagers warned Peter. They were angry and upset. They returned to their work, grumbling about the boy's foolish prank.

Not long after, Peter shouted again, "Wolf! Wolf!" The villagers, although skeptical, ran up the hill once more. But again, they found no wolf, only a grinning Peter.

The villagers scolded Peter sternly, "Save your frightened cry for when there really is a wolf! Don't cry 'wolf' when there is no wolf!" But Peter didn't take their words seriously.

A few days later, Peter was watching the sheep when he saw a real wolf sneaking around his flock. His heart pounded in his chest as he cried out, "Wolf! Wolf!"

But this time, the villagers didn't come running. They thought Peter was trying to fool them again. They ignored his cries for help and continued with their work.

The wolf attacked the sheep, scattering them in all directions. Peter watched helplessly as the wolf chased the terrified sheep away. He tried to fight the wolf, but he was just a boy, and the wolf was too strong.

At sunset, the villagers noticed that Peter hadn't returned with the sheep. They walked up the hill, expecting to find him playing another one of his pranks.

Instead, they found Peter sitting on the hill, his eyes red from crying. "There was a wolf here! The flock is gone! I cried out, 'Wolf!' but you didn't come," he sobbed.

The villagers looked around and saw the scattered wool and hoof prints. They realized that Peter had been telling the truth this time. There had indeed been a wolf.

An older man, known for his wisdom, went over to comfort Peter. He put his arm around him and sighed deeply. "Nobody believes a liar, even when he is telling the truth," he said.

Peter looked up at the wise man, tears streaming down his face. He understood the truth in the man's words. His lies had cost him the trust of the villagers.

From that day on, Peter changed. He became responsible and honest. He understood the importance of truth and the consequences of lying. He regretted his previous actions deeply.
