The Idiom Exchange

Alex and Jamie sat at the back of the room, their textbooks open but forgotten. Instead, they were engaged in a lively discussion about idioms, their voices rising and falling with amusement.

"I still can't wrap my head around why we say 'kick the bucket' when someone dies," Alex mused, his eyebrows knitted in mock confusion.

Jamie chuckled, leaning back in his chair. "Right?

It's like there's some secret club where they come up with the most bizarre phrases," he replied, his eyes twinkling with mischief.

Alex nodded eagerly, "Or like 'barking up the wrong tree.' I mean, who decided dogs would give such great metaphorical advice?"

Alex grinned, tapping his pencil against the desk in thought. "And what about 'spill the beans'?

Who was spilling beans all over the place to mean sharing secrets?" he asked, eyes widening in faux disbelief.

Jamie snorted, "Maybe someone really loved their legumes," he suggested, setting off another round of laughter.

Jamie leaned forward, a conspiratorial glint in his eye. "But the best one has to be 'raining cats and dogs.' Imagine the chaos if that were literal!" he exclaimed, gesturing wildly at the ceiling.

Alex laughed, "The poor mailmen would have a field day with that one," he added, shaking his head in mock horror.

As the classroom began to empty, Alex and Jamie gathered their things, still snickering over their conversation. "Same time tomorrow?" Jamie asked, hoisting his backpack over his shoulder.

Alex nodded, "Definitely. I need more idioms to dissect," he replied with a grin as they headed out of the classroom, leaving behind a trail of laughter and half-understood idioms.
