Milli, brave but wide-eyed, skipped beside Geo and Bot as the three friends headed home after helping people all day. The windows of the shops reflected the fading light, and long shadows stretched across the road like dark fingers. "It got spooky so fast tonight, and even the city looks different when the sun goes down, but as long as we stay together, I know we can make it home safely,"
Geo stopped walking when a long, hollow moan drifted through the air from somewhere inside the park. Bot tilted his head, and his screen dimmed nervously as another eerie sound floated out of the mist. "Did you hear that, because that definitely did not sound like a cat, a bus, or anything normal, and I really do not like the way that swing is moving all by itself,"
Milli grabbed Geo's arm as the floating figure drifted higher and let out a soft, trembling wail. Two bright eyes shone from the mist, and the white shape seemed to glide toward them without making a sound on the ground. "Warning, warning, unidentified floating object detected, and my circuits are informing me that this is a very bad time to stand still and investigate,"
Milli, Geo, and Bot ran for their lives, their hearts thumping as the ghostly wail echoed after them. "Run faster, do not look back, because I am too scared to see if it is still behind us, and I really, really want to be somewhere bright and safe right now," "I am running as fast as I can, but it feels like the sound is following us all the way down the street, and this might be the scariest thing we have ever seen in Umi City,"
Breathing hard, Bot waved his arms while Milli and Geo tried to explain what they had seen. Their voices tumbled over one another as they told everyone about the ghost in the park and the terrible sound that chased them out. "Attention, citizens of Umi City, there is a spooky floating ghost near the old park, and we strongly recommend staying in well-lit areas until we understand what that creepy thing actually is,"
New character: Mr. Bell, a calm janitor with a gentle smile and a practical mind. Mr. Bell listened carefully, then walked with the friends back toward the park until his flashlight revealed a white sheet tangled on the branches near the fountain, with two glowing bike reflectors caught in its folds. "There is your ghost, my friends, and it is nothing more than a sheet blown from a clothesline, a pair of reflectors, and the wind making music through the fountain pipes, which can sound very frightening in the dark,"
Milli, Geo, and Bot stared for a moment, then burst into relieved laughter that echoed through the park. Their fear melted away, replaced by embarrassed smiles and a new kind of courage. "I was so sure it was a real ghost, but I guess scary things can look much worse when it is dark and our imaginations start racing ahead of us,"
Geo smiled at Milli and Bot, feeling proud that they had faced their fear and learned the truth. Even though they had run for their lives and told everyone about the ghost, the night ended with safety, laughter, and a lesson they would remember. "Next time something spooky appears, we should still be careful, but maybe we should also take a closer look before we let fear turn a fluttering sheet into the scariest ghost in all of Umi City,"
