The sun had barely risen when the two teen sisters, Mary and Anna, were awakened by the crowing of a rooster. They lived in a small wooden cabin in the heart of the frontier, a world filled with hard work and simple pleasures.
Both sisters were bestowed with chores. Mary, the older one, was responsible for cooking and cleaning, while Anna took care of the animals.
One day, while fetching water from the nearby stream, Anna broke their only bucket. Fearful of their father's anger, the girls decided to lie about it.
When their father asked about the bucket, the girls blamed it on a wild boar that roamed the forest. Their father, a stern but fair man, was not easily fooled.
He looked at them with a sharp gaze. "Are you sure it was the boar?" he asked, his voice filled with suspicion. The girls nodded, sticking to their fabricated tale.
Their father thought for a moment. Then, he asked them to show him where the boar had supposedly knocked the bucket. They led him to the stream, their hearts pounding.
There were no signs of a wild boar. The father turned to them, his eyes narrow. He knew they were lying. "Tell me the truth," he ordered.
Mary confessed. She told their father about Anna breaking the bucket and their fear of his anger. The father's expression hardened. "Lying is not the way," he said.
As a punishment, he decided to give them a belt spanking. The girls pleaded for forgiveness, but their father was adamant. "You must learn the value of honesty," he declared.
