Edward Tulane, an elegant china rabbit, sat proudly on the lace-draped table. His owner, a young girl named Abilene, loved him dearly, but Edward was indifferent.

One day, during a family trip, Edward was accidentally thrown overboard into the ocean. Abilene was devastated, but Edward felt nothing.

A kind, old fisherman eventually discovered Edward entangled in his fishing net. He took Edward home, where he was loved and cherished.
