Living in the small town of Meredith was a vampire named Elsie, a high school sophomore. The moonlight betrayed her vampire nature with its pearl white gleam off of her nearly translucent skin.

Being a vampire in high school came with its pitfalls. The battling desires were exhausting - the clash between wanting to be normal, blend in, make friends; and the consuming thirst for blood, the primal instincts that ran deeper than her desire for teenage normalcy.

Elsie wasn't your traditional vampire, she yearned for affection, for companionship. She was as human as her condition permitted. No one knew her secret - daylight didn't burn her, and garlic didn't repulse her.

She remained a mystery to her classmates. They whispered about her unchanging, ethereal beauty; her peculiar, pale eyes, and her polite but unusual distance kept from a close friendship.

However, amidst all the whispers, one person saw Elsie for who she truly was - Jake. He was the captain of the soccer team, smart, and irresistibly charming. He didn't care about Elsie's oddities; he felt an inexplicable pull towards her.

A bond developed between them. Elsie found something worth living for, or rather, worth controlling her thirst for. Jake filled her immortal life with mortal joy. She loved Jake, her first and only, just as he loved her.

With prom night approaching, Elsie experienced human excitement and anticipation. She dreamt of a regular teenage night full of laughter, dancing, and innocent love. But lurking was a fear — her darkest instincts.

The night of the prom, Elsie looked stunning in a crimson gown that contrasted beautifully with her snowy skin. Jake couldn't take his eyes off her. They were the perfect couple, admired by all.

The smell of blooming corsages, the rhythm of the music, Jake's warmth against hers - everything was surreal, perfect. It was a night Elsie had always dreamt of, the normalcy she craved.

But as the night wore on, under the intoxicating effect of being around so many people, she started to feel her control slipping. The thirst began to creep in, more potent than ever.

Panic seized her as her fangs extended. Her eyes, usually a calm grey, turned blood red. Jake, noticing her discomfort, suggested they step outside for some fresh air.

But she couldn't resist. The scent of Jake's blood was overpowering. With a tear rolling down her cheek, she unwillingly sunk her fangs into Jake's neck, draining him of his life.

Realizing what she had done, she screamed, releasing Jake's lifeless body from her deadly grasp. She fell to her knees, howling in agony at the sight of the man she loved, lifeless due to her actions.

The aftermath was chaotic. Elsie fled the scene, leaving behind a devastating memory. Jake's death was ruled an unsolvable case, and Elsie was claimed missing. The town was cloaked in sadness and fear.

Elsie, haunted by her actions, vowed never to harm another human. She isolated herself, feeding only on animals and developing a control over her bloodlust which she never thought possible.

The following years were filled with remorse and self-hatred. She roamed around aimlessly, living her eternal life in the shadows, bearing the burden of a mistake that cost Jake his life.

One fateful night, she saved a little girl from a rogue vampire attack. In that moment, she realized that even though she was a monster, she could still do good. She decided to use her existence to protect innocents.

Elsie was never the same again. She was a high school girl who longed for friends, for connection, for love. She was a vampire, cursed by her thirst for blood, responsible for her beloved's tragic death. Yet, she was a protector, vowing to save the innocent.

She was a monster, an angel, a girl with a torturous past and a hopeful future. She was Elsie, the vampire. And as she wandered into the shadows, she carried with her the haunting memory of Jake and the lessons she had to learn the hardest way.
